Moments by the Fire-Metal Sculpture

This sculpture represents my first exploration into welding, transforming scrap metal into a reflective piece of art. The figure, constructed with simple yet intentional forms, sits beside a symbolic fire—a tea light encapsulated in a handcrafted metal holder. The minimalistic background directs all focus to the figure and the delicate interplay between the raw textures of the metal and the gentle glow of the flame.

Moments by the Fire is inspired by cherished memories of building fires and playing in the woods with my dad and brother. I wanted this piece to capture not only those physical experiences but also the emotions of warmth, connection, and simplicity they bring. The choice to use scrap metal aligns with my interest in sustainability, while the process of welding—my first attempt—represents both the labor and joy that come with creating.

By designing the figure in a seated pose, I aimed to evoke a sense of contemplation and intimacy, allowing the tea light’s flame to become the centerpiece of the story. This sculpture began as a pile of scrap metal, each piece carefully selected for its potential to convey the scene I envisioned. I started by sketching ideas of a figure sitting by a fire. I wanted the figure to feel simple yet expressive, focusing on posture and balance rather than intricate details.

The welding process was entirely new to me, and I approached it with both excitement and caution. After planning the composition, I prepared the materials by cutting and sanding each piece to fit together. The main body of the figure was created from straight metal rods, shaped to suggest arms, legs, and a torso. The head, a rounded metal piece, was added last to complete the figure's sense of presence.
